On this day, we believe that the world can easily be divided into two eras, the pre and the post pandemic era. Yes, the pandemic that is the talk of the town from almost 3 months now, the corona virus. We all know that it all started from Wuhan-China back in December. However as we know the severity of any situation depends on how soon it succumbs a major portion of individuals. Just like that, the world took it less seriously as long as it was within the boundaries of Wuhan. The only concerned ones or the ones in crises were considered to be those who were directly affected by it and were dealing with it.
Now, it has spread to more than 190 countries of the world. The corona virus is something about which the world was unaware of. Untiring efforts are being put in to discover its cure but there had been no achievements even after 3 months. The thing which started to be a spice for memes has now become a nightmare for many if not all. With every day passing, we have come to know that we are fighting with an enemy which is invisible, deadly and have no cure. The only remedy that seems to have worked is social distancing. We all know that man is known to be a social animal and the life in 2020 had been super active until we had corona taken over all of us. This pandemic has brought the whole world in to a huge economic, social and psychological crises. Fear, anxiety, uncertainty and stress sounds the new world order currently.
The corona virus is known to attack the immune system and it has been observed that people with weak immune system are more prone to it. It seems that fear has found a new definition in these 3 months of this pandemic. People are afraid of even their own kids, parents or the ones whom once they could not think of living without.
The ratio of people recovering from it is way high than the mortality rate. Then what is the reason of it being all over our minds? Why is it that there is a huge increase in cases of psychological patients. The answer to it could be that as we know an individual can be considered to be in crises when the circumstances overwhelm their capacity to cope. A person even with the strongest nerves can fall to the 24/7 media coverage of the negative side of this disease. Everyone around seems to be more focused on sharing how much people got effected rather than sharing the number of survivors or success stories. Be it social media, electronic media or word of mouth, there are so many conspiracy theories being shared about it and they are only adding fuel to fire.
Almost every country of the world is experiencing lock down as a prevention strategy. This has resulted in people staying at home for a period of time they never experience before. For poor people things are more worse than the rich ones. Small homes, less resources and having no idea of when this will end is causing a lot of stress among the masses. Every new extension in end date of lock down is adding a strange as well as strong pressure on the mental health of people. There is a fear of boiling point to reach soon. No matter how strong you are, when you see or listen about people getting died of it all the time you get stressed out. People don't even know that if this stress is temporary or a long term crises. This is what adds to the worries. People want to hug, meet and greet their loved ones but the fear of getting infected by corona virus has taken over the globe sadly and seriously.
This crises has stress markers that might be new or not known previously. Some people will come out of it soon but some might have deep impacts on their lives. It is never easy to do something forcefully and that also for an uncertain period of time. The psychologists or psychiatrists dealing with this situation or these cases have their own challenges. They are dealing with a widespread atmosphere of depression where they are expected to behave normal while keeping the spirits of the patients uplifted. The only way that seems workable to come out of this crises is to remain calm, patient, aware of the facts but not be a prey of an infodemic, in which misinformation spreads. Don't lose hope and keep supporting the community as by uplifting each other we all will come out of it sooner rather than later.
We hope that by counseling and continuously supporting people in our community no matter poor or rich, we can still be the gainers out of worst situations as well. The need of the time is that rich countries, businesses, communities and people work hands in hand with the poor ones and help them get out of this crises. If we were able to do this, we would surely have a more caring, loving and peaceful world for our future generations. Every night has a day and we hope the day after this darkness is a bright sunny day.
